Yor Week Day 5: Family ☕🍵

A quick drabble of Yor and a teen Anya! I just wanted a sweet little snapshot of their daily life post-canon/post-reveals

“Your birthday’s coming up.” Yor stirred her coffee. “Are you busy? Your father and I were thinking of taking you to the aquarium, he said there’s a special event going on the same day.”

“I’m not sure,” Anya leaned her chin in her hands. The pair sat at an outdoor table at the local cafe. “Becky wanted to go out. She and a few friends wanted to spend the day together.”

The aforementioned friend’s sense of fashion had started to rub off on her. Happy to lose her high school uniform on breaks like this, she was dressed in current trends and styles. She’d grown her hair long to style in her own way, refusing help from her friends. Yor never said anything, but she recognized the way the thick braids tucked just at her neck, with curling pink locks framing her face.

Anya’s features scrunched up, lost in thought for a moment. “So...” 

She was slowly ridding herself of the habit, but Yor couldn’t help her thoughts from carrying her away in nervousness. Of course the girl’s friends would want to take her out. She thought the aquarium was a good idea – Yuri had loved going too, as a kid. But that was just it, Anya wasn’t a baby anymore. She had to stop thinking she knew how to care for a family just because she’d cared for her brother for a little while. Having a daughter was different.

“That sounds fun,” she forced a smile. Knowing it wasn't the most convincing of looks, she flooded her mind with the thought. She did believe it. It did sound fun. Things with friends were always great. Yor was so happy Anya had such wonderful friends in her life. Anya deserved to have fun with them.  “Yes, you should do that!”

Sure enough, she saw Anya’s bright eyes studying her. Though her mind was spilling with positivity, the conflicted look on the girl’s face didn’t lessen.

“The thing is… we’ve been doing a lot as a family recently, and, well…”

Yor’s hands clutched around her mug. Hairline cracks appeared on the side. She willed herself to calm down, but her heart was breaking as much as the cup. It was no wonder her daughter would rather spend the day with others! She’d been too overbearing, too enthusiastic to do lame things. She’d been keeping Anya from being the free teenager she wanted to be. 

She’d heard accounts of children growing up too fast, but it was even more painful than she’d expected. It seemed like only yesterday she was threatening parents of students who were insulting Anya’s tiny stature, and now she was grown and running off to make her own birthday plans.

“So it was you that scared Mrs. Greene our first year!”

“What?!” This time, the mug did shatter. Coffee and porcelain shards spread across the cafe table.

“I knew it!” She let out a giggle. “You had papa fooled, though.” Anya handed her a napkin, and helped to mop up the mess. “And mamaaaa…” She tugged on one of her pink curls, looking away.

Yor was surprised; that little gesture was a habit of her own. “What’s wrong?”

“I was going to say… I really want to hang out with you two.”

Her eyebrows raised.

“I just thought it would be silly to cancel on Becky, you know? Since we’ve already done so much together lately. But… the aquarium sounds fun. I really want to spend my birthday with you.”

Yor nodded, trying not to let her face betray her giddiness at the sentiment. “That sounds wonderful!”

The two continued making plans. Yor wanted her to be able to see her friends as well, and there was certainly room for everyone at the aquarium. Anya wanted to make sure the 'special event' wasn't an invention of her workaholic father. The three were used to working cases together, but it was her birthday, after all.

Suddenly, Anya’s eyes narrowed. Her lips twisted into something mischievous. “So… what are you guys getting for my present?” 

“I told you, it’s a surprise,” she said as her daughter stared intently.

Her look of triumph immediately turned to horror. She swatted her hands at Yor. “Noooo! Stop that! I don’t need to hear about you and papa making out!”

“Maybe you shouldn't have been snooping.” Yor grinned shamelessly. “Come on, I get to keep one thing from you all year.”

“That’s still gross.” She made a theatrically disgusted face, which only made Yor’s smile soften. “Hey! It's not adorable when I do that.”

“You’re always adorable.” 

Anya huffed. 

“And also,” Yor grimaced.

“Mm?”

“That whole thing about Charles’ parents stays between us, alright? Your father can never know.”

The girl let out a laugh. “Aw, mama. I'm you're daughter – you know I can keep a secret.”

This is a little out of the blue, but I genuinely really enjoy hearing your tsaritsa lore and character breakdowns. She's hasn't been someone I'm terribly invested in getting to know as a character, but reading your thoughts on her has really piqued my interest. I've never considered what being the goddess of love could mean I guess

Anyway, all this to say I've been really enjoying your tsaritsa/fatui hype :) it's contagious

THIS IS SO GOOD TO HEAR i love going into deep dive breakdowns of characters especially ones who don't really have a lot of content, because it provides wiggle room for a lot of interpretations. not that i can blame you for not being too invested in her, considering we've never actually seen her, and only hear about from a few sources (venti, who doens't really say much, and childe + arle who also technically dont say much in the grand scheme of things but understanding their characters to see how it changes their view of the tsaritsa and where it overlaps is a good chunk of it)

so its my job to do what hoyo doesn't and hype the hell out of her /j. ive been writing her since i joined sagau around when it first started snowballing into popularity i dont think i could leave if i tried

if you were in usopps position, and your friend whod previously been supporting you despite their parent being bigoted towards you, it would hurt if they suddenly switched up and then their staff almost shoot you. you wouldn't think "its okay and shes did nothing wrong inherently because shes an abuse victim and abuse victims dont have moral obligations to not be mean to their friends. they can do whatever"

sorry nope literally can’t help myself so if you haven’t seen douglas is cancelled yet then go watch it instead of reading the rest of this post because legitimately major spoilers for a show you absolutely should watch as un-spoiled as possible.

The thing i keep coming back to with this (still, at times, genuinely flawed) show, is how i actually cannot think of any piece of media that tackles rape culture this specifically. This is not about rape. It is not a #metoo story - it’s about the culture that enables rape. It’s very very specifically NOT about sexual harassment/assault/coercion itself. Madeline brushes her feelings about Toby off - she gets to hate him forever but that’s simple. What matters to her is the man who was meant to be one of the good ones, who would never ever treat a woman the way Toby treated her, but who turned around and walked away when he saw that she was terrified and alone in Toby’s room. Who turned the traumatic experience he knew she had gone through into a quippy little one-liner to laugh about at parties, diminishing her work in the process. THATS the kind of man this show is calling out. And it’s about the women too - the wife desperately trying to stop her husband from admitting to anything while accusing madeleine of fucking him. The daughter who refuses to believe that her dad would ever lie to her.

Spotting references to horror films in the X-Files has been very fun so far. One of the previous episodes had a clear Psycho reference with looking behind the shower curtain, this episode has an obvious 2001: Space Odyssey one with an intelligent machine begging for its life. Very satisfying so far

Its honestly kind of funny seeing Wanda Stans desperately try to defend Wanda from hate via...bringing up a-lot of villains, mainly males one because they wanna make the argument anyone who hates Wanda is sexist, in comparison, just because: the villains they bring up always end up having fans who do acknowledge the villains are evil and did shit that's fucked up...meanwhile Wanda stans are determined to ignore that Wanda was aware of what she was doing in the end in WandaVision and willingly kept it going, attacking anyone who tried to stop her. And don't get them started on Multiverse, the level of denial with these fans that Wanda is a murderous villain who wanted to kill a literal child for her powers just so she could then kill another her and kidnap that version of her's kids is astounding. Like yeah can bring up whatever villain they want to try and compare, that villains fans probably still handle their fav being a villain better then Wanda stans this point who act like Wanda was some poor victim who didn't know what she was doing or was being controlled, when it was the total opposite of that in the MCU.

Yeah if you watch the fifth estate tonight, be warned because it’s so aggressive. It’s not gonna help native people - it’s gonna bring out all the ignorants, and it has. Calling her all sorts of names. 😿 They don’t even give a shit about how natives adopt. They just ready to tear a woman down.

I think more of this type of thing is to come if they start digging up sites where residential school children are supposedly buried.

I'll have to see for myself, probably not tonight though I'm just vibing today. Here's my thing: Whatever is true about her ancestry, it does not to me negate the fact that she has done things to immerse herself into our culture, and ultimately help natives. Also this- I want to call it an exposé- not helping natives ultimately is reminding me of what is happening with Killers of the Flower Moon right now. Lots of criticism from natives, like from K. Devery Jacobs "painful, gruelling, unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic." I am going to see that movie for myself in a few days, may or may not post my thoughts on it afterwards.
